At the End of One of Those Days

It had been one of those days.  They had argued over stupid things that the villagers had asked for, and the children, picking up on their parents unease, had been more than a handful, and in the end, he had stormed out of the house and had gone outside to sulk.

But now, long after dinnertime, he was back with an armload of wood, and a couple of rabbits, looking at her sheepishly, apologetic.  Kagome smiled at him, a small, tentative smile, but put her sewing down.

She had saved him some dinner.  It was on the edge of the fire where it could stay warm, but he ignored the food and his seat by the fire pit and walked over to her.

"I'm glad you're back," she said, lacing her fingers into one of his hands.

He could tell from the smells and the redness of her eyes that she had been crying.  Sitting down next to her,  his hand reached up, and delicately, gently cupped the side of her face, as if she were fine porcelain, and not his wife of ten years.   There were moments like this, when he felt stupid and unsure and needy that it amazed him that she was still here, hadn't invoked the magic to take her back to the weird world she came from, hadn't decided that everything they had built in that ten years was a mistake.

"I didn't mean - " he started to say, when she put a finger over his lips.

"I know," she replied. Kagome gazed up into his eyes, and, brushed his bangs in a futile attempt at keeping them out of his face. "Hungry?"

"Maybe later," he replied.  His right ear twitched.  "Are you all right?"

Something warm lit up her eyes.  "I will be, now that you're home."  She cupped her hand over his, pulled it from her cheek, and planted a kiss in the center of his palm.  "The children are asleep," she said.

"Keh," he replied.  "I'm sorry I didn't get to tell them their story."  He slid claw-tipped fingers through her hair and sighed.  "I'm such a baka.  How do you put up with me?"

"I love you," she said, leaning against his shoulder.  "And who's the baka here?  If I hadn't said - "

He cut her off with a quick kiss.  "I love you, too, woman," he said, snuggling her close and resting his cheek on the top of her head. They sat  that way for a long time, enjoying the quiet.

... just one of those days. sometimes people either don't allow themselves to get over such things or they allow things to build up until they explode and do/say stupid hurtful things. loving longterm takes much forgiveness and humility. this was lovely.
