She Walked Through the Shadows

She walked through the shadows
in the wood in the late day.
The warm air felt heavy
as she walked on her way,
the warm air felt heavy
with the promise of rainfall.
She walked through the shadows
as she went on her way.

She carried a sad secret
in the woods in the late day;
she carried a letter
as she walked on her way,
she carried a letter
to make a mother’s tears fall.
She walked through the shadows
as she went on her way.

He never would come home
through the woods in the late day;
he never would join her
as she walked on her way.
He never would join her
as she walked, spring, summer or fall.
She walked through the shadows
as she went on her way.

She heard the thunder rumble
in the woods in the late day.
The thunderstorm neared her
as she walked on her way.
Did it sound like the cannon
that made her own true love fall?
She walked through the shadows
as she went on her way.
No doubt both a commentary on my absorption with the news, but also a study in the use of repetition and limited rhyme scheme...I think I liked how it turned out...For me, it's rather experimental.

While reading, the mood is quite somber and I feel the words flowing like her steps. You give a reason where and why she is walking. It almost feels as she has a hard time breathing because she is upset and choked up, when you reference the air being heavy.

I am not sure, but I tried a different verb tense for stanza 3. It sounded better saying:

He will never come home
through the woods in the late day;
he cannot join her
ask she walked on her way.
He cannot join her
as she walked spring, summer, or fall.
She walked through the shadows
as she went on her way.

I am not sure. That is the only thing that seems a bit awkward and could be played with a bit.

Otherwise, the imagery is quite strong and well done.
