Literature Text

The ghost of Marley,
Scrooge's partner in business,
hardhearted in life,
cursed to dwell in an eternity of suffering,
bound by heavy chains
to his cash boxes,
still wanders the land,
looks at what men do to this day
worshiping profit,
rattles his chain
moans in the midnight
and wishes
he could send them all spirits
to bring them back
into some semblance
of realizing
people
and compassion
matter more
that money in accounts.
This is bouncing off Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Marley was Scrooge's business partner. He had died before the story started, and it was his ghost that warned Scrooge of the ghosts of Christmas that would visit him. In the afterlife he was bound with a very heavy chain and a string of cash boxes, and had to go through the world mourning the evil mean-spirited business practice did, unable to change anything.

Indeed. He died not only before the story, but before knowing Christ. He never knew the sacred origin of Christmas, so he didn't managed to wake on Christmas day.
