Literature Text

I look up at you,
stars of the summer.
Too seldom I walk beneath you -
you dance above me,
unfamiliar,
as I have hidden from you,
dodging mosquitoes
and heat
and the lateness of the gathering dark.
What will you tell me tonight,
as I try to make out your patterns,
will you whisper to me
of summers to come,
of the wind dancing in my hair
growing gray with age,
or will you whisper to me
a warm and soft farewell?

I lift up my hands,
and think of summer thoughts,
flowers and green,
my tomato plants dotted with red,
peaches,
the feel of my beloved next to me.
My zen is shattered --
I am not ready to let you go.

Breathing a vow into the night,
I promise to learn your names,
summer stars,
I will not let me go into the darkness
without calling you friend.
Second in a series of contemplations while I await cancer surgery.
